Mahintana staff participated in the annual International Coastal Clean–Up (ICC) on September 21, 2019 at the Minanga, Buayan with approximately 500 volunteers from BLGU Buayan Council and various civic organizations, academe, government offices and private institutions namely Red Ribbon-KCC, Mindanao Polytechnic College, BSP – Datu Acad Dalid ES, Girl Scouts of the Philippines, DepEd XII Teachers, Balite ES, Shariff Mukshin ES, Ligaya ES, Buayan NHS, City Engineer’s Office, DENR-CENRO Buayan. A total of 2,750 Kgs. or 110 sacks of residual waste (cigarette butts, food wrappers, straws, nylon strings, plastic cups, cellophanes, diapers, etc.) were collected in 0.3 km coastal area of Prk. Minanga, Buayan.
The ICC was conducted by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) – General Santos City in partnership with Mahintana Foundation, Inc., USAID, DENR – XII, Coca-Cola Foundation, Protected Area Management Bureau – Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMB–SBPS), Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Education, Environmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC) – Sarangani Province, Holy Trinity College of General Santos City, PNP Regional Maritime Office – XII, General Santos Foundation, Inc., RD Foundation, and Smart Telecommunications. The event themed “Battle for Litter-Free Seas” aims to engage the surrounding coastal communities and stakeholders in cleaning beaches, coasts, rivers, waterways and underwater dive sites to remove trash and record information on the debris collected. Results will aid in better waste management policies/plans, product packaging designs and in stirring environmental consciousness among the people.
