R2R Team undergoes Macrosomatic Cloning Training

  

R2R Team participated in the Claveria Tree Nursery, Inc. (CTNi) Macrosomatic Cloning Training conducted for Dole Philippines Inc’s Research Department on October 24-26, 2018 at Mahintana Conference Room and Dole Agri Research Center, Poblacion, Polomolok South Cotabato. This training is a preparatory activity on the Corporate and Community Investment on Tree and Environment – Growing Trees for Pallets Program of the company. It was attended by 17 participants from organizations and institutions namely: Dole Agri Research (6), Cannery Community Nursery (5), Matutum Coffee Producers Association (2), Greentropics Coffee Enterprise (1), Dole Community Relations (1) and Mahintana Foundation, Inc. (2). The resource speakers from CTNi were Forester Ebenezer A. Tabilla, Nursery head and Agriculturist Rex C. Hilot, Extension Forester. This training aims to capacitate the Research Department of the company and several community partners on the techniques and process of Macrosomatic Cloning.

In Macrosomatic Cloning, cuttings (meristems) are obtained from a good mother tree and enhanced to produce more tissues, which further differentiate themselves and become an individual plant or clone of the mother tree. Thus, this will accelerate the propagation of endemic species of trees in the area.

SK-Cannery celebrates 6th Youth Summit

In celebration of the 6th Youth Summit and 7th Leadership Camp, Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Cannery Site (SK-Cannery) conducted a tree growing activity at field 102B gully on October 25, 2018. A total of 300 bamboo hills were planted at the mentioned site. The activity was organized by SK-Cannery headed by April Dave Sorioso, SK Chairman, and was participated by 60 youth representatives from Brgy. Cannery, Out of School Youths (OSYs), and youth members of Obed’s House Ministries of General Santos City.

DARBC Celebrates Cooperative Month 2018 with a Tree Growing Activity

In celebration of the Cooperative Month 2018, Dolefil Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative (DARBC) conducted a tree growing activity at Fields 109ABC gully on October 24, 2018. A total of 1,500 hills of fruit and forest tree were planted at the mentioned sites.

There was a short program before the planting rites which was facilitated by DARBC staff. Mr. Cecilio Balili, Director of DARBC, gave his inspirational message followed by messages of support by  Municipal Cooperative and Development Council (MCDC) Mr. Lory Asilo and Municipal Councilor Nilda B. Almencion of LGU Polomolok. The event was participated by a total of 67 participants from the LGU Polomolok, MCDC, Unified Engineering Works Multi-Purpose Cooperative (UEWMPC), BLGU Cannery, DARBC Clusters, and Mahintana Foundation, Inc. (MFI).

DXCP – CMN 585 kHz. Radyo Totoo & CPAG ARKVentures Enterprise conduct Tree Growing Activity

DXCP – CMN 585 kHz. Radyo Totoo & CPAG ARKVentures Enterprise conducted a tree growing activity on October 20, 2018 at Prk. Pananggalon, Brgy. Poblacion, Malapatan. A total of 1,000 mangrove propagules were planted along the 1 linear Kilometer coastline. A total of 14 CPAG workers participated in the said event.

 

The adopters agreed to conduct a periodic monitoring of the planting site and inform Mahintana of the planting area’s status.

Dolefil Executives Join the Coffee Plantation Trekking

Mahintana assisted and coordinated the coffee plantation trekking activity  of Dolefil Executives on October 13, 2018 at Prk. 8, Kinilis, Polomolok . The area was the adopted community of Mahintana during the MICADEV Project. This is an exposure activity of the Dolefil visitors on the livelihood and culture of the Mt. Matutum Coffee Producers Association which is composed of B’laan Indigenous People.

The Dolefil Executives are Industrial Operations Director Mr. Peter Hamilton and his son Ryland Hamilton, Senior Analyst Mr. Yohei Kajikawa, Industrial Operations Mr. Jorge Arturo Gomez, Agri Research Ms. Adriana Obando and Mr. Roberto Rojas. They were assisted by Mr. Fred Fredeluces, proprietor of Greentropics (supplier of Arabica and Civet Coffee), Ms. Ella Mae M. Babao. Mr. Roel Ian Blanker and Ms. Shinny Ula from Mahintana and Ms. Ma. Theresa Catalan from Dolefil Community Relations Department.

Polomolok NHS plants along 109A Gully

In celebration of their 2018 Science Fair, the Polomolok National High School (PNHS) conducted a tree growing activity on October 12, 2018 at 109A Gully, Brgy. Cannery, Polomolok. A total of 300 bamboo hills were planted as part of their replanting action for the mortalities from their previous planting activity last May 30, 2018. The activity was headed by Mr. Ednie Agtas, PNHS Science Coordinator, which was participated by 50 students.

Hineleban Foundation, Inc. visits LWR-REVIVE and SMICZMP Areas

R2R Team toured Hineleban Foundation, Inc. IP Affairs Coordinator Mr. Erwin Marte at the LWR -REVIVE (2011-2014) and Southern Mindanao Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project – Community Organizing and Organizational Strengthening (SMICZMP – CO/OS) (2004) areas on September 27,2018 at Prk. 7, Sumbakil, Polomolok. The community participation and involvement on the reforestation activities was highlighted on the tour.

The team showed Mr. Marte the assorted forest and fruit trees planted at Prk. 7 and the Sumbakil Nursery which are part of the REVIVE Project. The bamboo forest on both sides of the Silway River was also showcased where the communities has started the harvest of bamboos at their areas. An average income of Php 5,000 per month were profited by the land owners on the planted bamboos (only 6-8 poles per harvested per clump for sustainability).

CTNI visits Community Nurseries, Gullies and Dole Agro Research Facility

Dole Philippines, Inc., together with Mahintana, facilitated the visit of Claveria Tree Nursery Inc. (CTNI) General Manager Mr. Roberto J. Togle and CTNI Nursery Head Mr. Ebenezer A. Tabilla at the proposed area for the Ramet Multiplication Garden on September 26-27, 2018.  The visit was a follow-up activity of the Dole and Mahintana benchmarking at CTNI at Misamis Oriental for the Trees-for-Pallets Project. The activity was headed by Dole Industrial Operations Senior Analyst Mr. Yohei Kajikawa, together with Dole Corporate Affairs Division Head Atty. Melquiades L. Hernandez III and Community Relations Department Manager Ms. Leamor B. Bañaga, Mahintana President& CEO Mr. Mr. Martiniano L. Magdolot, Operations Manager Mr. Jobe C. Tubigon and Project Coordinator Ms. Ella Mae M. Babao.

The team led the visitors to Cannery and Brgy. Maligo Community Nurseries for exposure trip on the different planted bamboos and assorted forest and fruit trees. Then, the team went to the 4-hectare company owned area at Prk. 5 Dam, Maligo & Landan where bagras trees can be planted and be used as a ramet multiplication garden. Mr. Tabilla inspected the trees and commented that one of the trees is a possible candidate as a mother plant. They also visited 113BC Gully in Brgy. Polo to see the different tree species are planted.  On the second day, the team visited Dole Agro Research Facility in Poblacion, Polomolok and was toured by Dr. Noel Perpetua and Ms. Meredith Dacayo around the facility. The team took a side visit to the Engineered Bamboo House.

During the discussion on the next steps, it was agreed that: the species for planting will be hybrid bagras, white lauan, and other locally available species; CTNI will provide technical assistance and transfer of “Macro Somatic Cloning” Technology to Dolefil.

CTNI is into mass production of quality tree seedlings by means of Macrosomatic Cloning. It is a subsidiary of RI Chemical Corporation with a vision to be a leader in the propagation of genetically superior trees that will fight climate change, alleviate the poverty and increase the income of tree farmers.

MENRO Polomolok conducted tree growing at Bgry. Lamcaliaf

Mr. Luwee Roy Siacor and Mr. Dante Francisco participated the tree growing activity of Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO)  Polomolok where 2,000 forest tree hills were planted along Crossing Repolyo to 306A located at Brgy. Lamcaliaf, Polomolok, South Cotabato on September 26, 2018 as part of their community development initiative.

The activity was headed by Engr. Agustin Valencia, Sr., MENRO – Polomolok Officer, which was participated by other stakeholders namely, Local Government of Polmolok (LGU – Polomolok), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), faculty and students from the General Santos Academy (GSA), and Mahintana Foundation, Inc. (MFI). A total of 98 participants from the aforementioned institutions/organizations joined the event.
